Why your Big Three matters

Most of us know our Sun sign, but it is only one part of the picture. Two people born on the same day can feel completely different because their Moon and Rising signs differ.

  • Sun sign: who you are at your core and what makes you feel alive.
  • Moon sign: your emotions, your needs and what home feels like to you.
  • Rising sign: your outer style, your first impression and how you approach new things.

Questions, answered

What is my Big Three in astrology?

Your Big Three are your Sun, Moon and Rising signs. The Sun is your core identity, the Moon is your emotional world and the Rising sign (Ascendant) is the first impression you make. Together they describe you far better than your Sun sign alone.

Why do I need my birth time?

The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so on some birthdays the time decides your Moon sign. The Rising sign changes roughly every two hours, so it always needs an accurate birth time and place.

Where can I find my birth time?

In the US, your birth time is usually on your long-form birth certificate. You can request a copy from the vital records office of the state where you were born. A baby book or hospital record may also have it.

My city is not on the list. What should I choose?

Choose the nearest big city in the same time zone. For the Sun and Moon this makes no difference, and for the Rising sign it is usually accurate to within a degree or two.

How accurate is this calculator?

Positions are calculated with the astronomical formulas from Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms, accurate to a few hundredths of a degree, and historical daylight saving time is handled by your browser’s time zone data. If a planet sits right at the edge of a sign, a professional chart can confirm it.

Is my birth data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
